Here we go, fam! This is the launch of my new community through Bulletin and I just want to say I’m very happy and honored that you are here and reading this introductory welcome note. If you know me or my writing, you’ll know that one of my favorite sayings is:
This saying has proved itself to me again and again in my life. It quite literally and crudely translates to: “there is no bad from which good can not come.” I’m a Covid survivor so guess what? Every day is a day I am grateful for. I’m alive. And I’ve chosen to fight through those dark, sad, scary moments because I believe that good will come.
You probably know another one of the traits that defines me as a proud Mexican immigrant is the ability to accumulate un chingo de trabajos (i.e. many, many jobs) ✊🏽^_^
This is me. My full name is Maria de Lourdres Hinojosa Ojeda. Growing up this name felt like a lot, especially when I wanted to fit in and wished my name was something simple like “Suzie”. In Mexico, one of my tias combined the syllables in my name and gave me the nickname “Malulis”. Everyone except for my family had a hard time pronouncing this name.
When I went to college in New York in 1979, I met my best friend, Cecilia. Ceci, as I like to call her, was a fellow journalist and unabashed activist, an Argentinian queen raised in Jersey.
She gifted me with a shortened version of my cumbersome nickname by reducing the whole thing down to simply “Malu”.
Cecilia passed away from breast cancer in 2015, and since then, hearing the nickname Malu often reminds me of her. Less than a handful of my closest friends use this nickname with me. I’ve kept the name private. But now that my memoir is out, I feel comfortable enough to share its significance.
Taking on this project was a gift from Ceci. She always encouraged me to pause and create my own joy, especially in the busiest moments of my life. Maybe this is her way of communicating that to me. I want to honor her, so I am titling this Bulletin Malu & You.
What are some of the things you can look forward to? Well, mira, let me give you some examples. If you listen to my politics podcast In The Thick, you’ll hear me joke about being a bird watcher. Here I can share why this matters to me. We’ll talk identity, intergenerational chisme, practicing and actively living antiracism, sex, feminismo. Or why our joy, nuestra alegria, is a form of resistance!
We can chat relationships...did I mention I just celebrated 30 years of marriage? And if you ask for some advice I will give it to you lovingly, like a tia! You can call me tia Malu.
What I’m saying is: Malu & You is gonna👏🏽 be 👏🏽 that 👏🏽spot.
I have so many stories that I can’t wait to share with all of you. As I get older, I am pulling back the curtains on some of the more private moments of my life because I just don't feel they need to be kept to myself anymore. So let’s share this together. Of course, there is also a surprise involved because I love surprises!
So gracias, Ceci and all of YOU. I can't wait to begin this adventure together.
